Unity is about using elements in a design to convey a theme, consistently carrying over a landscape through mass plantings or repetition. Balance is more about comparing the look between two segments of a landscape, while unity is a view to the overall picture of a landscape. When the individual elements of a landscape fit together to form a coherent theme, the design has unity and harmony.
Proportion means that the size of the individual components or groups of components in a landscape fit into the whole landscape harmoniously. One way landscape designers do this is proper use of transitions when we look at the size of the respective components. If a landscape fails to convey good proportion, one big reason is that there are abrupt transitions.
Transition is the gradual change from combinations of the basic design elements of color, scale, line, form, and texture. For example, if the color of flowers are repeated as you move your eyes from one part of the yard to another, there is a sense of a cohesive whole that grows from those smooth transitions.
